Maybe you need a bigger pot?

Sometimes you find yourself in a space of life where you keep hitting brick walls. You feel like you have entered the wrong room and you get a strange feeling that maybe you read the address incorrectly. The brochure you read promised a wonderful experience and yet this is not at all what you imagined. Strangely this has happened to me far too many times to count. It took a quirky little Monstera plant I picked up on a whim to prompt a major life shift.

I purchased the little plant back in April 2025. I was starting a new job and this symbolized new life and a much needed fresh start. I had never had a talent for plants but for some reason I felt I needed a plant in my office as it was a very grown up thing to do. Magically this little life began to thrive without much help from me. Maybe it thrived on optimism and hope or just pure joy. But over time things started to stagnate. Nothing was flowing. Not the ideas, not the energy and not the joy. I knew this girl needed a bigger pot. I knew her roots were being constricted and she wasn’t able to get the nutrients she needed to blossom into all that she could be.

As I looked at my plant, I noticed that the current “pot” I personally was in was no longer adequate. I was being restricted, suffocated and I was not able to grow into the person I knew I was meant to be.

After a huge leap of faith, I grabbed this girl (my beautiful yet now struggling plant) and took her home, and I took my own self home too to start a new beginning.

I found a beautiful aqua colored pot in the garage that was no longer in use. It gave her plenty of room to stretch her roots deep to give her the support that she needed to grow upward towards the sun.

Now, it has been almost six months since we’ve both been in our new pots. It has been a wonderful few months, although challenging, stressful and often scary. I’ve definitely been out of my comfort zone. As I look back, it’s been an incredible period of growth, and my beautiful plant is flourishing!

It can be easy to ignore that your pot is too small. You can rationalize yeah, it’s OK, it still has dirt and I’m still watering it. It has sunlight but deep down you know it needs more. It needs more space, it needs more support and a better environment with which to grow. Often we stay in our pots much like the frog in the “boiling frog” parable. As it goes, there is a frog in a stockpot that doesn’t realize the temperature is slowly rising and is coming to a boil. He fails to realize the gradual and uncomfortable changes until he finds himself cooking in boiling water. Knowing when to make a change is key to avoid being cooked or having our roots strangled.

Repotting takes a lot of effort. Period. Often the effort is in deciding which new pot you want to replant in. The decisions of color, size, shape and price all weigh in on the choice. It’s important to find a good soil to make sure this there will be fertile ground for good growth. It can be a messy process and there will be spillage. This little girl actually lost a stem in the process and repotting. The process can often cause some loss. In the long run, hopefully it will all be for the best when those roots can stretch down deep and anchor firmly for support so we can reach radiantly towards the sun.

So I ask today, do you need a new pot?

If so, when?
